How much alder?   no comments

Posted at 12:10 am in

I have no idea if  a little corner of our land has simply been colonised by the ever active alder or perhaps it had been planned that way some time in the past. Either way, we have about half an acre of alder , most of which reach maybe 30 feet or so in competition for the light resulting in lots of bare boughs. The land is obviously quite damp, compounded by the fact that the canopy, if you can call it that, allows a lot less light in in the summer that normal. Consequently, the ground beneath remains damp and wet for most of the year. That said, it’s the driest it’s been this year since we’ve owned the place, so much so I managed to get to cutting some of the brambles back and creating a few paths. The problem is what on earth can i do with it? Is there a commercial use for the stuff or better yet can I put it to good use on the land, I know for a fact that it’s no good for fence posts which is a shame.
I do plan to build a pond in time and it would certainly be good as a liner or support for the surrounding banks. Ideas appreciated.

More sunrises   no comments

Posted at 12:02 am in

I never ceased to be impressed and not just a little bit smug at our wonderful sunrises here in Ddolwerdd so here are some more photographs.

We also frequently have a lovely mist following the river down the valley.

Just spotted this over on Scan.co.uk and it sure does look a blast, ideal for those with too much time on their hands, people in an office for example :-)

A USB controlled missile launcher, whatever next?

Cultivati—-onnnn   no comments

Posted at 5:37 pm in

Seeing as I had the trailer on loan I needed to get it cleared and returned. Fortunately the motorcycle came off easy enough and necessity being the mother of invention- I simply tied the cultivator onto the front of the tractor and drove away, the battery may be flat but it still weighs three and a half tons.

After having popped into Llanelli to pick up my dear wife who’d been to a ‘Greek’ evening with some friends (well, that’s what she claimed) the battery was charged and the tractor was up and running and soon after I was hitched up and ready to roll.

I’m very, very pleased with this most simple of implements. Ideally I should have had an extra pair of hands to clear the bulky debris such as stones, branches and the damn black silage bags (how bloody difficult would it have been for the dirty previous owner of Ddolwerdd to actually pick them up now and again have been?) into a waiting trailer. Nevertheless, the previously very uneven and rubble/branch strewn bottom wood was looking rather respectable.

The thing is now that this freshly tilled soil is just crying out for something to be planted in it, I wonder what though? While standing there admiring my handiwork while the sun settled behind me it struck me it would make a lovely picnic spot.

Ah! the joy that is a 40 year old pig tailed cultivator.   no comments

Up bright and early this morning, well was actually nearly eight as I decided to watch Match of the Day in bed, how good is that?
Anyhow, there was a beautiful day ahead if the sky was anything to go by.

Couldn’t really ask for a better day to try out the new cultivator.  There was the small matter of getting the darn thing off the trailer to begin with. Typically enough, today was the day that the battery on the trusty tractor decided to be a little bit flat.  Hmmm

More later.

Southampton, The New Forest and Duck Lane- Alan Wicker’s got nothing on me!   no comments

Posted at 11:35 pm in

Arrived in Southampton late on Friday evening at the house of a good friend’s mum. The reason was mainly to pick up 1979 CZ motorcycle that Trev and family have kindly given me. Here’s a pic of Southampton early on Saturday morning, the name of the street eludes me for the moment.

Here’s on of the motorcycle loaded up, the reason I have such a huge car trailer is that I was going to pick up a cultivator for my tractor on the return trip.

Sloe, Sloe quick quick sloe.   no comments

Ouch, is that the best title I could come up with :-)

Another frosty morning and I had to drag myself away from a warm bed and an even warmer wife. Guided by some avid Sloe pickers (read: sloe Gin drinkers) on a website whose address eludes me for the moment, I was out at first light, ok shortly after, walking along our hedgerows.  First impressions were very disappointing with what appeared to be Blackthorn bushes with no fruits at all. More later…
